Angela M. Maness was raised in a military setting and joined the Marine Corps in June of 1987. She graduated as the Platoon Honor Recruit in September 1987 from Oscar Company, 4th Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.

In October of 1987, Lance Corporal Maness reported to Camp Johnson, North Carolina, for her occupational specialty school of 0121 Administrative School (Service Record Book Clerk). Upon graduation from school in December 1987, she received orders to Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico, Virginia, to Consolidated Administration Section.

In May 1988, she was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal. In July 1990, she was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant and received orders to Maintenance Battalion, 2d Force Service Support Group, Camp LeJeune, NC, for duty as the Administrative Chief.

In January 1992, she volunteered for Drill Instructor duty. After completing Drill Instructor school, MCRD, Parris Island, SC, she was immediately assigned to 4th Battalion where she served as a Drill Instructor in Oscar Company for twenty four months.

In October 1994, she was promoted to Staff Sergeant and received orders to Officer Candidate School, MCCDC, Quantico, VA. As permanent personnel she held the billets of Administrative Chief, Sergeant Instructor, Platoon Sergeant and Physical Training Instructor until December 1998 when she was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and then received orders to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan, for duty as the Adjutant.

In January 2000, GySgt Maness was ordered to Marine Aircraft Group 24, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Kaneohe Bay, HI. In December 2003, she was selected for First Sergeant and received orders back to Marine Corps Recruit Training Command, Parris Island, SC.

In March 2003, First Sergeant Maness checked into Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Range Company, Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot, Parris Island, SC. In August 2005, she received orders to Oscar Company, Fourth Recruit Training Battalion.

In December 2006, she was selected to Sergeant Major and received orders to 2d Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, where she served as the Battalion Sergeant Major for Combat Logistics Battalion 8. Upon checking into CLB 8 in March 2007, she deployed to Camp Fallujah, Iraq, in Aug 2007 to March 2008 and Camp Leatherneck and then Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, in May 2009 to October 2009.

In January 2010, Sergeant Major Maness was ordered to Combat Logistics Battalion 3, Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group where she deployed to Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, in September 2010 to April 2011.

In April 2012, she reported to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC, where she served as Station Sergeant Major.

In June 2013, she reported to Marine Barracks Washington D.C., to assume the duty of Sergeant Major at the “Oldest Post of the Corps.”

Sergeant Major Maness' personal awards include the Meritorious Service medal with gold star, Navy Commendation medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy Achievement medal with two gold stars in lieu third award.
