Established in 1801, Marine Barracks Washington, is the "Oldest Post of the Corps" and has been the residence of every commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806. The selection of the site for the Barracks was a matter of personal interest to President Thomas Jefferson, who rode through Washington with Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in search of a suitable location. The site now occupied was approved due to its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and because it was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.

The mission of COMMSTRAT is to support Marine Barracks Washington with photographic, videographic, reprographic, and written content to support the unit’s participation in events and to develop products that highlight the Marine Corps and broaden our social media presence and media relations. The section advises commanders and staff on communication strategy matters, most importantly in crisis communication. COMMSTRAT develops and integrates communication plans, communicates with internal, domestic and foreign audiences. COMMSTRAT produces written and visual information products in order to build understanding, credibility and trust with audiences critical to mission success through the timely release of truthful and accurate information.

Protocol is the practice developed among nations in the course of their contact with one another. Protocol is an unwritten guideline; which guides how an activity should be performed. It combines the use of good manners; common sense and allows for effective communications between heads of state and their representatives. 

In addition, the protocol office, coordinate and execute all executive level activities; distinguish visitor’s (DV) visits; assists subordinate command with requirements as they relate to protocol by providing guidance, advice and directions in areas relating to; seating, precedence, receiving lines and arranging visits from important visitors.

United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps

"The Commandant's Own," The United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps performs martial and popular music for hundreds of thousands of spectators each year. Comprised of over 85 Marine musicians, dressed in ceremonial red and white uniforms, it is known world-wide as a premier musical marching unit.

Special Requests

Requests for participation in special events/holidays such as Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day, will be considered on the basis of participant availability and unit operational commitments. Please be aware that service members cannot officially participate in beauty pageants or serve as escorts for events of a similar nature.
