Established in 1801, Marine Barracks Washington, is the "Oldest Post of the Corps" and has been the residence of every commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806. The selection of the site for the Barracks was a matter of personal interest to President Thomas Jefferson, who rode through Washington with Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in search of a suitable location. The site now occupied was approved due to its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and because it was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.

Col. Carrie Batson

Colonel Batson is from Fairfield, California.  She was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from Pepperdine University in 1999 with a B.A. in History. 

 

In 2000, she graduated with honors from The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, and then attended the Public Affairs Officer Course at Fort Meade, Maryland. 

 

In October 2000, she was assigned to the 1st Marine Division as the Assistant Public Affairs Officer. 

 

In October 2001, she was assigned as the Public Affairs Officer for the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), where she conducted three deployments: One in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (Horn of Africa) and Operation STABILIZE (East Timor), and two combat deployments to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

 

In January 2006, Captain Batson led the I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF)/Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Consolidated Public Affairs Office. 

 

In July 2007, Captain Batson graduated from San Diego State University with an M.A. in Communication, and earned her civilian Accreditation in Public Relations (APR).

 

In July 2008, Captain Batson was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) in the Pentagon. She served in the Division of Public Affairs’ Strategic Communication Secretariat and then led the Plans Branch.  

 

In August 2011, Major Batson attended Command and Staff College, where she graduated with distinction and earned a Master's Degree in Military Studies. In July 2012, she attended the School of Advanced Warfighting, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Operational Studies. 

 

In July 2013, Major Batson deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (Afghanistan) as the speechwriter to the Commander, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). 

 

In August 2014, Major Batson was assigned to the I MEF G-3/5 as a MAGTF Planner where she led operational planning for the MEF Exercise (MEFEX), Exercise Dawn Blitz, Pacific war plans, and MEF experimentation.  

 

In August 2016, Major Batson returned to the Pentagon, where she served as the Force Development and Requirements Branch Head, Office of Marine Corps Communication, HQMC.

 

In July 2018, Lieutenant Colonel Batson was assigned as a student to the Marine Corps War College, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies. 

 

In June 2019, Lieutenant Colonel Batson assumed command of Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii. 

 

In July 2021, Lieutenant Colonel Batson was assigned to U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Communication Strategy and Operations.

 

In July 2024, Colonel Batson assumed command of Marine Barracks Washington, D.C.
