Marine Barracks Washington, D.C.

Established in 1801, Marine Barracks Washington, is the "Oldest Post of the Corps" and has been the residence of every commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806. The selection of the site for the Barracks was a matter of personal interest to President Thomas Jefferson, who rode through Washington with Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in search of a suitable location. The site now occupied was approved due to its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and because it was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.
8th & I
"Oldest Post of the Corps"

who we are

The Marines of Marine Barracks Washington uphold a proud tradition dating back to 1801, representing the Marine Corps in parades, ceremonies, funerals, dignified transfers, conflicts, and security missions. As ambassadors of the Marine Corps, they honor the legacy of Marines who stood guard at the "Oldest Post of the Corps" before them, at home and abroad. Through rigorous training and discipline, 8th & I Marines ensure the Marine Corps maintains a warfighting advantage and readiness to respond to the Nation’s call. Their efforts embody the Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment, while preparing them to return to the Fleet Marine Force ready to win battles. These Marines continue to embrace the legacy of service, sacrifice, and professionalism that have defined the Marine Corps and 8th and I for 250 years.
