Marine Barracks Washington, D.C.

Established in 1801, Marine Barracks Washington, is the "Oldest Post of the Corps" and has been the residence of every commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806. The selection of the site for the Barracks was a matter of personal interest to President Thomas Jefferson, who rode through Washington with Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in search of a suitable location. The site now occupied was approved due to its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and because it was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.
8th & I
"Oldest Post of the Corps"

who we are

Since 1801, the Marines of 8th & I have served as the public face of the Marine Corps, demonstrating 250 years of traditions, standards, and history to visitors, our nation's leaders, and their guests. Marine Barracks Washington is entrusted with some of our Corps' most sacred responsibilities, such as providing Presidential support and safeguarding senior leaders, laying fallen Marines and their family members to rest, maintaining a National Historic Landmark, and executing parades and ceremonies within and beyond our historic gates. 225 years after President Thomas Jefferson selected this plot of land as the home of the Marine Corps, the "Oldest Post of the Corps"  upholds the same values of honor, courage, and commitment that define every Marine, serving as a living testament to the legacy built by the Marines who set the standard.
