A Trip Down Memory Lane
Former Special Ceremonial Platoon (SCP) commander, Col. Jim Bathurst, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, made a very special visit to the Barracks. Bathurst, a Vietnam veteran and former Barracks Marine, enlisted in 1958 and served in Vietnam, where he was recommended for a combat commissioning as well as a meritorious promotion to gunnery sergeant if the commissioning did not go through. Then, Staff Sgt. Bathurst, checked into the Barracks as the new SCP platoon sergeant, and was promptly promoted to the rank of gunnery sergeant upon checking in. A few weeks later, his combat commission went through and he was promoted to second lieutenant.
