Gen. Joseph Dunford, assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, delivers his remarks during a Memorial Day commemoration ceremony to pay tribute to the American and French lives lost during the Battle of Belleau Wood at Aisne-Marne American Memorial Cemetery, May 27. The ceremony marked the 94th anniversary of the battle and represented the long-lasting American-French friendship, brotherhood forged before the battle grounds of World War I to the current operations in Afghanistan. The cemetery has 2,039 known-buried, and 250 unidentified, who lay in the slopes of the hill. In the chapel, more than a 1,000 are inscribed in remembrance of the missing.
