Established in 1801, Marine Barracks Washington, is the "Oldest Post of the Corps" and has been the residence of every commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806. The selection of the site for the Barracks was a matter of personal interest to President Thomas Jefferson, who rode through Washington with Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in search of a suitable location. The site now occupied was approved due to its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and because it was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.

U.S. Marines with the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon execute their "bursting bomb" sequence during their performance in Times Square, New York City, N.Y., May 21, 2025. The Silent Drill Platoon helped kick off Fleet Week New York with a performance in Times Square. Fleet Week New York is an annual celebration where U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard ships dock in New York City, allowing the public to tour vessels and meet service members. By participating in ceremonies like this, Marine Barracks Washington connects the traditions of the Marine Corps with the American people they serve. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl.
