Established in 1801, Marine Barracks Washington, is the "Oldest Post of the Corps" and has been the residence of every commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806. The selection of the site for the Barracks was a matter of personal interest to President Thomas Jefferson, who rode through Washington with Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the second commandant of the Marine Corps, in search of a suitable location. The site now occupied was approved due to its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and because it was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.

The Silent Drill Platoon performs during an evening parade at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., Aug. 21, 2015. The Honorable Mr. Andy Berke, Mayor of Chattanooga, The Honorable Earl Anthony ‘Tony’ Reavley, Director of Hamilton County Emergency Services & Homeland Security, and The Honorable Mr. Fred Fletcher, Chief of Police, Chattanooga Police Department, were the guests of honor for the parade at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., and U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Richard P. Mills, Commander of Marine Forces Reserve, Marine Forces North, was the hosting official for that same parade. The Evening Parade summer tradition began in 1934 and features the Silent Drill Platoon, the U.S. Marine Band, the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and two marching companies.
