Service Operations Deputies review Evening Parade

25 May 2001 | Marine Barracks Washington Public Affairs Marine Barracks

The Service Operations Deputies of the United States Armed Services observe "8th and I" Marines as they pass in review during the Evening Parade here May 25.

Army Lt. Gen. Larry Ellis, Vice Adm. Timothy J. Keating, Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert H. Foglesong, and Coast Guard Rear Adm. Terry M. Cross are escorted by Marine Lt. Gen. "Buck" Bedard, Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies, and Operations, and Col. Richard T. Tryon, Commanding Officer, Marine Barracks Washington.

The Service Operations Deputies act with the full authority of their respective service chiefs and are directly responsible to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as principal assistants for joint matters.  They are also responsible for the preparation and review of critical documents relating to the joint planning process.

The modern-day Evening Parade has been a tradition since July 5, 1957, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Here, the past, present and future of the Marine Corps meet to produce a dramatic celebration of the esprit de corps uniquely inherent to the United States Marine Corps. This year marks the bicentennial of the barracks, which is known as the "oldest post of the Corps."

More information about the post's units, history and bicentennial events can be obtained on the Internet at www.mbw.usmc.mil.
